Cosmelan Depigmentation

Cosmelan Depigmentation System

Cosmelan is a prescription treatment that dramatically fades benign skin hyperpigmentation such as sun spots and melasma. It offers a unique delivery system to penetrate the skin with a potent formula of kojic acid, azelaic acid, arbutin, ascorbic acid, and phytic acid that inhibits tyrosinase, an enzyme that produces melanin. After the in-office treatment, you'll follow a prescribed at-home regimen that includes creams and serums to enhance the results and maintain your skin's improved appearance. This phase helps to further lighten the skin and prevent new spots from forming. After 21 days, you will come back into the clinic for a touch up session and follow up.

The treatment works by exfoliating the top layers of skin and inhibiting the production of melanin, resulting in a more even skin tone over time. People often choose this system for its effectiveness in treating stubborn pigmentation issues, and many see noticeable improvements within a few weeks. However, it's important to follow the professional's guidance for the best results and to protect your skin from sun exposure during and after treatment.

Cosmelan Depigmentation System Procedure

Clients will pause using retinoic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and any other acids five days prior to treatment, as well as avoid prolonged unprotected sun exposure. Clients will be cleansed and their skin will be prepped with microdermabrasion. Our master estheticians will apply a special mask to your skin, which contains active ingredients that target melanin production (the pigment responsible for color in skin). This mask is usually left on for a specific amount of time, depending on your skin type and the level of pigmentation. Clients will leave the clinic with a thick, peanut-butter-like mask on their skin. Clients will need to do their best to not disturb the mask until they remove it about 8 to 10 hours later. Soon after removal they will definitely have some erythema and sensitivity. Following the post-care instructions and products in the provided post-care kit will be crucial for best results.

Recovery of Cosmelan Depigmentation System

8-10 hours directly post treatment, clients may feel some sensitivity and have some redness when the mask is removed, similar to a mild sunburn. This is normal and usually subsides within a few hours to a couple of days. About 2 to 3 days after the treatment, you may start to experience peeling or flaking as the skin exfoliates. This can last for about a week, and it's essential to avoid picking at the skin to prevent irritation or scarring. Avoid using retinoic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and any other acids during the entire process. Only use your Cosmelan home kit. Purging of the skin is normal approximately 4-6 weeks after your treatment. Be diligent with sunscreen. Avoid prolonged unprotected sun exposure. Over the following weeks, you should start to see improvements in your skin tone as pigmentation fades. Full results may take several weeks to months to become apparent.

Potential Risks of Cosmelan Depigmentation System

While Cosmelan is generally safe and effective for many people, there are some potential risks and side effects to be aware of, including: Redness, swelling, and sensitivity, excessive peeling, allergic reactions. In some cases, the treatment can lead to temporary or, rarely, permanent changes in skin pigmentation, either darkening or lightening of the skin. Following the post care care, staying out of the sun and being liberal with sun protection will minimize potential risks and allow for best results.
